There are some obvious things you shouldn’t do when you’re wearing braces. Or, at least we think they’re pretty obvious. We know that as you become accustomed to wearing brackets and wires, it’s often easy to forget to remain cautious of factors that may lead to the damage of your orthodontic work. To ensure you’ve got a running list going in your mind of things to watch out for, we offer up a few easy-to-overlook details.
#1: OTC Teeth Whitening
You’re not going to want to mess with OTC (over-the-counter) teeth whitening when you’re wearing braces. While we suggest against this no matter what’s going on with your smile, attempting to whiten the exposed portion of your teeth can cause some serious problems down the line. In addition to irritating your gums, you may end up with teeth that yield uneven color (once the brackets are removed and the untreated tissue is revealed).
#2: Chewing Habits
We’re not talking about your habit of chewing on the left or right side of your smile or anything like that. When we say “chewing habits” we mean when you chew on food or items as a habit to relieve stress, pass the time, or for any other reason. Generally speaking, whatever you’re chewing on may damage your braces, such as the following:
- A pen or pencil
- Your fingernails
#3: Using Your Smile As A Tool
We don’t suggest you do this without braces either, but when you’re wearing an orthodontic treatment on your teeth every day, choosing to break apart food, tear open packages, or carry bags with your smile instead of your hands (or the appropriate utensil) can lead to some serious damage. Skip this and reach for scissors or whatever you need instead.
